Here’s the scoop! I have an older model Whirlpool refrigerator. It’s one of the ones where the freezer is on top. There is a temperature meter with two places to change the settings. (Fridge and Freezer) that goes from 1 to 5. (1 is warmest and 5 the coldest.) The fridge seems fine. The freezer how ever seems to be freezer burning everything we put into it. (And we’ve tried every setting) For example, we bought 100 dollars worth of freezer foods. No more than 5 days later we had to throw it all out. We are not storing things incorrectly, because everything was fine up until 3 months ago. We are taking things like boxed chicken nuggets from the freezer at the store and putting it directly into our freezer and it’s going bad. When you cook it, it gets mooshy and gross. I’ve had ice cream in there since last night and it’s already starting to get freezer burned. My land lord doesn’t believe us and it’s getting really hard to deal with. Someone help!

Wanted to add that this is a one unit thing. It is not in two pieces.

Also I need to know how I can fix it.

hmm. I’d say disconnect the freezer from the frig, and buy a seprate freezer, unless you just want to replace the whole thing.

The first thing that comes to mind is that the thermostat is taking to long to cycle on. If the food is frozen most of the time and the refer shuts off then this is a good possibility. If the box is running almost continuously then that’s not the case. Check the temp in the freezer. It should stay in a range of 0 to 10 degrees. If the temperature goes high (over 20 deg.) before coming on then change the thermostat.

All the cold is produced in the freezer and the fan blows it around
in the freezer and also down in the refrigerator. The freezer
control just opens and closes a little vent, so if you put the freezer
control on coldest, it is closing off the vent and robbing the cold
from the fridge. If it is frosting up on the back panel of the freezer then you probably have a defrost problem and if not then
it is probably low on freon or the compressor is going out. If the fan is not blowing, then some of the cold will sink to the bottom. Either
way, you need to call for service as it would be beyond your ability to fix. I also find it hard to believe that the fridge part is working ok, but the freezer – not. – just call for service. Pay no
attention to the other answers, especially the first one.

What do you mean by “freezer burn”? Freezer burn is the drying out of food that is exposed to freezer temperatures usually from improper wrapping. Are you getting frost on everything? Does the ice cream have frost on it or are there ice crystals in it. If it were freezer burned it would be dried out and a thick gummy residue on top.

Are the doors closing completely and sealing all of the way around? Do you have both controls set on 3? Is the freezer(evaporator) fan running smoothly without squeaking or rumbling? Is there frost on the back wall of the freezer or if very old on the floor of the freezer? If there is frost in one of these areas you have a defrost problem and that is the source of your problem. Are the condenser coils(under the unit) blocked with dust and is the condenser fan running?

Check on all of these things and if you want you can click on my name and contact me and I will be glad to assist you further.
